No matter what the job, get a certificate. It should cost you no extra as any reputable electrician should issue one as a matter of course. They will either give it to you on completion of the work or within a few days by post or in person. If you do not get one ask for it and if they refuse, get the work checked by another electrician. If they are with a company that is either NICEIC or ECA registered and you do not receive a Certificate within a reasonable time frame, complain. By providing you with a Certificate they are telling you that the work they have carried out is safe and complies with the Electrical Wiring Regulations.

Minor Works Certificate
This is issued where work has been carried out on an existing circuit. This could be the addition of a socket on an existing circuit, the change of a light fitting, a repair to an existing circuit but in general a modification. The Certificate consists of one page.

Electrical Installation Certificate
This is issued where a new circuit has been installed, where a new fuse has been installed in a spare slot on your fuseboard or an existing fuse has been changed and a new cable has been installed. It is also used for the whole of a new installation, the change of a fuse board, where all circuits connected to it must be tested. Certificate consists of 5 pages or more.
